Whoever, Wherever & Whenever
With the on-going Ukraine-Russian conflict, there has been more scrutiny and light shed on the repercussions of the people caught in the war-torn areas. World Refugee Day is a United Nations observance that is held on 20th June every year and it is a day where we should take a moment to realise the significance of the mass exodus as a result of the conflict. With millions of people forced out of their dwellings, countries and communities are taking in these people for shelter. It is simply too hard for us to understand what it feels to be part of a situation like this. This year’s theme is “Everyone has a right to seek safety” and whoever, wherever and whenever they are and come from, they have a right to seek safety.

Humanity Without Prejudice
According to the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR), there are about 84 million around the world that have been forced to flee their homes and about 31% of these people are considered refugees. The COVID-19 pandemic dealt a blow to these refugees and the people helping them and we as a part of the human race should reflect on our humanity from these events. Life for refugees is extremely challenging and difficult as they are making huge living adjustments and have to deal with new cultures and languages. Medical care can also be an issue.

How Can You Contribute to World Refugee Day?
Now that you know more about World Refugee Day, here’s how you can help!
Reach out & lend a hand - If you are in a country that accepts refugees, reach out to them! You can consider asking them to join you for dinner or letting them stay at your dwelling for an agreed period of time if they are looking for a place to rest. You can also help the refugees acclimate to their new community by bringing them around to familiarize themselves. Another way to help refugees is to find ways to give basic necessities to refugees overseas. Market for Good’s “Buy to Gift Ukraine” program helps to buy basic necessities for Ukrainian refugees based in Hungary through the Baptist's charity to ease their living conditions.
Buy to Gift Ukraine
In addition to the short introduction above about MFG’s Buy to Gift Ukraine, here are some numbers we would like to share to show you how many refugees have been impacted through this campaign of ours! As of 15th June, through the generous donations of people, we have sent out 190 cans of food, 45 packs of baby food and 20 sets of toiletries that include tissues and toilet rolls. This is only the start and hopefully more people will make an impact as well!
