I say this everywhere I go, on panels, in meetings, in conversations that matter:
The social crisis and the climate crisis are the same crisis!
Research backs this up. Treat them as separate problems, and you get policy silos.
At MFG, we believe business is where real change happens because business controls the budgets!
Here's the number that stops people in their tracks:
- The global corporate gifting market is on its way to $1.65 trillion by 2033.
- The global MICE industry adds another $1.2 trillion to that picture.
And yet — 40% of all corporate gifts end up in landfills. Lanyards, branded merchandise, plastic trinkets. Discarded.
Trillions of dollars are flowing every year through corporate gifting, hotel procurement, MICE events, and hospitality supply chains.
But here's what no one is talking about:
According to UNWTO and UNEP research, in developing countries, exactly where most of this hospitality and events activity takes place, between 50% and 80% of every dollar spent on tourism leaks straight out of the local economy. In the most extreme cases, only $5 of every $100 spent by a tourist actually stays in the host community.
We're calling that out and offering a better path.
Imagine a hotel that doesn't just hire from nearby villages, but furnishes its rooms with locally made textiles, fills its amenity kits with products from indigenous cooperatives, and gifts its VIP guests something handcrafted, not mass-produced.
Imagine a conference where every lanyard was hand-woven, every gift told a story, every choice created a job.
That's not a dream. That's a decision.
This week's must-read from Eco-Business says it plainly: the tendency to treat poverty and climate as separate issues has squandered opportunities for integrated strategies that could create real, lasting change for the world's most vulnerable communities.
At MFG, we've been saying the same thing, from the gifting room to the boardroom.
The capital is already there. The decisions just need to change.
Better choices. Bigger impact. Every time.
